Known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame is often regarded as more challenging and slightly more expensive than the Marangu Route. Despite this, it is one of the most rewarding routes for those seeking both adventure and acclimatization advantages.
The Machame Route is ideal for trekkers with a sense of adventure and some prior hiking or backpacking experience. While it is physically demanding in parts—especially compared to routes like Marangu and Rongai—it remains accessible to well-prepared hikers.
This route is renowned for its scenic diversity, taking climbers through five distinct climatic zones. Highlights include the expansive Shira Plateau, an optional scramble up Lava Tower, the iconic Barranco Wall, and a traverse beneath Kilimanjaro’s stunning southern ice fields.
Although Machame sees higher foot traffic due to its popularity, it offers exceptional acclimatization with multiple “climb high, sleep low” opportunities. The route ascends from the southwest and descends via the Mweka Trail, allowing for varied perspectives of the mountain.
Trekkers also benefit from the opportunity to split the pre-summit day climb, ensuring better rest and preparation before the final push to Uhuru Peak.
In summary, Machame is a scenic, well-rounded, and challenging route—perfect for those seeking an immersive Kilimanjaro experience with great chances of summit success.
After breakfast, we drive to the Machame Gate—approximately a 3-hour journey—passing through the charming village of Machame, situated on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. From the park gate, we begin our trek through the lush rainforest along a winding trail that gradually ascends a ridge. The trail at lower elevations can be muddy and slippery, so gaiters and trekking poles are recommended. We continue trekking until we arrive at Machame Camp.

In the pre-dawn hours (12-2am), we begin our summit push between the towering Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. Trekking northwest through loose volcanic scree, we ascend toward Stella Point - the most demanding yet rewarding segment of the climb. After reaching the crater rim, we pause to witness an unforgettable sunrise over Africa, with faster hikers potentially viewing this spectacle from Uhuru Peak itself.
The final ascent from Stella Point may involve snow-covered trails during the hour-long climb to the summit. Standing at Uhuru Peak, you'll celebrate conquering both Kilimanjaro and Africa's highest point!
Our descent takes us directly to Mweka Camp, pausing at Barafu for lunch. The loose gravel terrain makes trekking poles and gaiters particularly valuable. At Mweka, we'll savor our final mountain evening, reflecting on this extraordinary achievement.
